Vaashi - Malayalam Movie Review

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

This is a review of the Malayalam Movie "Vaashi" written and edited by Anoop Prathapan and first posted on Facebook on the 18th of July 2022.

Vaashi is an impressive courtroom drama and a poorly scripted hard-to-endure family melodrama woven together. Tovino Thomas and Keerthy Suresh play Ebin and Madhavi, two inexperienced lawyers as shown at the start, but move on to take up a cheating/rape case at opposite ends for the victim and the accused, respectively. How they argue in the court to defend their sides and what happens in their family life consequently, form the rest of the plot.

Tovino looks decent in an effortless role. Keerthy emotes well except when she excessively laughs or even minimally cries. Kottayam Ramesh is on a roll with a role in every other movie that is released since the 2020 hit, Ayyappanum Koshiyum.

The family melodrama part should have been cut down by at least 50% to make the movie crisper and also, the makers should have taken up a better case for the couple to legally compete on. Music, as usual, as in all recent Malayalam releases is grim and there is no song worth humming a second time. The background score sounds lazy.

It was good to see my school-time/college-time contemporary, Dr. Arya A R on screen as Nanditha, the accused’s elder sister, long twenty-seven years after Spadikam, a movie in which she acted the childhood of the heroine Urvashi's character.

Watch it for a decent story and yes, you can fast forward the family melodrama portion, if you wish to.

My rating 6/10 Netflix (India)
